Excellent Trip (Summary)

Camp has ended and what an excellent training trip the team experienced. I have to say Thank you to E.R. for creating the blog and keeping the team back home and parents up to date on our daily activities. E.R you rock and did a superb job on this site.
Camp started with excitement, butterflies, and anticipation of the unknown. As we boarded the plane the chatter never stopped and bonding among the swimmers had just begun. I laughed everyday of the camp with the funny jokes, comments and the constant creative workouts the kids thought they were going to have to do. Neal , Leah, and Hobbie were so helpful and made the camp that much more fun (playing vball, giving technique workouts, dry land workouts, driving us everywhere, and making every meal a good one).
The group of swimmers who attend the camp gelled so well together and helped one another bring out something more each practice. It was truly exciting to see new heights of work ethic, team bonding, the constant "we can do this" comments, and overall positive attitudes. Each swimmer made this camp a unique memorable experience and I thank each and everyone of you for making the training camp an excellent one:
Erik "squirrel" and " Jeff, Going to the girls room!"
Adam "I love Mean Girls!"
Greeno "Mario cart...you should see the excitement"
Brian " Nahhhhh!"
Evan "my arm pits are burning"
Matt "What does B.C. mean? I was told Bathroom Chief"
Will "I love that kid"
Victor " I will race you 100 IM"
Zach "can we have Dunkin Donuts"
Jack " I need to re-apply sunscreen"
Erin " Can you take pictures Kim?"
Kate " Can you please have a boys team meeting!"
Elise" No pictures of me"
KathyrN "Please help us with the pranks"
Maddie "Oh Victor!!!"
Heather "Awkward"
Emma "OMG! HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL"

Lets continue the great work ethic and continue to push to new limits the rest of the summer.

We're home!

That's right: camp is over. Some of us are sad, some of us are happy, some of us haven't quite realized it yet and are wondering who they'll be sleeping with tonight.

For me, camp ending was a real shocker. I'd gotten so used to the constant sunburn, heat rash, and dread for the next practice that I'm not really sure what to do with myself now.

Today's ocean swim was really fun, and no one got eaten by a shark or stung by a stingray. Holker pulled ahead at the start of the timed rounds and completely crushed everyone but Adam. Apparently there were a few stingrays hanging around where we were swimming, but they didn't cause any trouble.

All in all, the camp was a really great experience. From learning that the Pettyes twins were secretly metal heads to catching Jeff singing Wagner in the hallways at 2AM, I learned something about each and every one of the swimmers at the camp.

Since the camp is over, I guess this will be my last post until next June, so, for the final time:

Almost done... Finally!

So much for an easy technique practice... We got to do a bit of fly drill, but our main set was 12x100s on hard intervals. The ocean swim tomorrow will be... I would say fun, but that wouldn't be accurate.

Below is my paragraph on Heather, as well as the rest of the team's paragraph's about each other.

***

Erik to Heather:
Coming to the camp, I honestly thought that you were one of the most obnoxious people on the team. Now, after getting to know you better since we've been here, I would have to take that back, though I must say that you can be awkard at times. You are certainly one of the most entertaining people on the team and having you in my lane has never been boring; you have a truly unique personality. At practice, you're always working hard, especially on the longer, harder sets. Finally, your obsession with Victor has made the conversations in our room a bit livelier than they would otherwise be. I hope that when camp is over, we can still be nice to each other.
~Erik

Erin to Jack:
Jack is a very important member of our team. I got to know him a lot more this trip. We swam in the same lane a lot and he always encouraged and helped all of us through the sets. He is a very positive person and is nice to everyone. He is very laid back, but also has a great sense of humor. He is really smart too. ( involving Victor in the pranks to distract us was a great idea:) haha) He's a good friend and a great teammate. whenever we have a super hard set, he always keeps everyone going. I will enjoy swimming with him for years to come!
-Erin :)

E. Flack to Matt:
There are too many words to describe a person like Matthew. This is the first time i had the pleasure to meet his aquaintance and his personality is definataly one i'll never forget. His vivid imagination and clever jokes always keep the team entertained while his energetic mood carries him through the long sets. He is loved by all including the coaches who are always looking forward to his presence. He completely dominates in Mario Kart and continues to stay fly with his ganster- essque golfer hat (gettin the ladies!!). Rooming with Matt has been a fun and unique experience.
-Evan

Adam to Grandfather Crust (Greeno):
You may be wondering why Greeno is named Grandfather Crust. If you have not seen this pale beauty, he is just that. His pale white skin glistens in the sun, but it also has a tendency to turn colors. He spends a good 20 minutes putting on 50 spf sunscreen every day and the sun still seams to creep in. The brominated pool dries all of our skin out, but Greeno's flakes off in a white powder, hence the nickname Grandfather Crust. He does not only turn colors, but he also has an amazing running ability. He rocks the morning runs and his long legs carry him across the wide stretch of the pavement. Rooming with Greeno has been a great experience and our Mario Kart races have brought merrories and good times.
-Adam

Brian on Emma Wilde
Where to begin? Emma is a very "wild" girl indeed. Always a party girl, it is easy to hear the thumping music from her room at all hours of the night. Usually her selections are from the little-known Jonas Brothers. A one man girl, she has her eyes on Joe Jonas, and will stop at nothing to win his heart. A self-proclaimed celebrity Twitter stalker she can never wait to see what Joe has recently posted about his day. The other love of her life of course is her mother. Constantly in touch, she always updates her with the news and events of the day. It sure has been a sensational experience interacting with a new member of the team.
BC out

Kathryn on Brian
Brians great sence of humur has added many unique words to everyone's vocabulary. Raaaah, he is consistantly entertaining the whole team. His hardwork has made him fast at swimming and encourages the rest of the team to stay positive. Brian getting sunburned is like Erik R not getting burned. He is very into ghetto music and cranks it in the car. He also is very sarcastic and jokes around alot. He is a very important member of the team and will have a great season.\
-Kathryn :)

Matt on Elise:
Elise is a very composed and can be a funny individual at various times. She also has an extremely good taste for comical movies. Along with working hard at practice, she has a radical surfing talent on the internet. After getting to know her over the week, she never fails to mention something interesting to talk about that I always succeed to miss. Elise is also very popular among the team members. One of her many great qualities, she never speaks any ill of anyone, she always has something positive to say. To return the favor, Elise never spends any time alone. She always has a friend by her side to talk with her. Seeing her positiveness throughout the week has constantly reminded me to be positive as well. Way to keep it rolling.
-Matt

Jack to Will:

Will is one of my best friends on the team and I really enjoyed rooming with him during this trip. He was very fun to be around and train with. He commonly helps me think positively, and change my perspective, especially when faced with a hard practice. We enjoyed watching Batman: The Dark Knight every day this trip on HBO as well as chilling out with cold towels to relieve ourselves of extreme heat rash. He has improved immensely throughout the course of this trip, especially in the morning runs. He stuck with Jeff's brisk pace during the runs without dying or making a negative comment. He always works hard at practice and I see him kicking butt on all of the sets, especially those consisting of backstroke. I look forward to hanging out with him in and outside of the pool this summer.
Jack McGinn

2 practices left!

This morning's run was a good half mile shorter than the last few days. A lot of the girls did really well, with all of them holding off Jeff and Will. Emma and Maddy took an early lead and were able to stay ahead of everyone but Brian and I.

Practice wasn't too bad this morning. We did an IM+non-free set culminatiing in (big surprise) 7x50 sprint from the blocks. Everyone did really well on the whole thing, though all of us are ready for the technique practice tonight. Some of the people in the other group (namely Kate and Emma...) seem scared of the IM set, but I have a feeling that they'll live.

Below are five more posts of us talking about the other swimmers. Once again, I'm not responsible for any grammatical errors, though I didn't see any major expressions of man love this time around. I promise to get mine up tonight...

Maddy on Kate:
I have gotten to know kate so well this year. She has such a great personality and is always fun to be around. She oddly resembles someone else on the team...but I can't seem to figure out why... Kate is always working hard and is always nice to everyone. Although she refuses to show the team, she is an amazing singer, and is going to start a trio with Erin and Adam. Even when kate hurt her shoulder, she pushed through it and worked her butt off anyways. She always has a smile on her face, and is super photogenic...if you know what I mean...can you say awkward!!?? Haha well Kate, you are gonna kick butt when we get back to Edina! Girl you are da best! Love you!!
<3 Maddy

Heather on Adam:
Adam is a very hard worker and is really fun to be around. I bet he is SUCH an amazing singer (even though i have never heard him) and he has a very funny personality. I haven't known him for very long but he always has a positive attitude and encourages everyone. His hard work toatlly pays off because he is super fast. Hes so nice to everyone and is a great brother to erin and kate! I'm so glad their family came to our team!
~Heather

Zach on Erin:
There are so many good things to say about Erin. During this camp Erin has helped the whole group, me included stay positive and look at the better side of things. Coming into the camp many people including me looked at people and saw the people that may not be capable of going as fast as some, however I soon realized that everyone would be working as hard as they could. Erin was working hard the whole camp and somehow (as of now) has maintained a smile virtually the whole time.
:) Zach

Kate to Erik:
Erik has been a very important member of our team. He works hard everyday at practice and is always very encouraging. When I first started swimming with Edina, Erik was one of the first people that introduced themselves. Outside of the pool, his personality makes our downtime a lot more fun. As you have already read, this blog is very good, thanks to Erik. Im glad that Erik brought Victor into our lives. It's been a lot of fun! I still don't know Erik really well but everything that I have seen has been very positive. I'm looking forward to swimming many more seasons with him.
~ Kate

Emma on Zach:
Zach is always a very hard worker, which pays off because he is really fast & muscular. He also has a really good attitude and stays positive through even the hardest sets...I don't think I've ever heard him complain! Although he can be quiet sometimes, he can also be really crazy and fun to be around. Even though I still don't know him very well, I have definetly gotten to know him better on this trip.

Well, it looks like Jeff posted a bunch of pictures while I was composing that last post, so here's a link to it. It has some people saying very nice things about other people.

EEEE Flack

For only going for like 3 days before Florida I am really impressed with how well you are doing practice wise. It's also pretty cool how chill and freindly you are to other people on the team. Also from only three days before camp you are able to do the fly sets that Jeff gives you is also very admirable on your part.
In Florida you are also very open and like to party even after hard sets through the day. Even through these tough sets you don't give up which is a bro move. Even chilling with you out of practice is really fun and i gotta say your a pretty funny guy and just keep on trucking through the practices.

Thunder and nice things

This afternoon's practice was absolutely brutal. Unlike this morning's 800s, this afternoon's main set was 40 x goal 50s. You can only imagine the excitement when Jeff noticed a storm brewing on the horizon and dropped the set to only 30x50s. However, we only ended up doing between 22 and 23 of them due to lightning. Of course, the bullhorn that told us to get out of the water was sounded two seconds after I pushed off on my 23rd, putting my life in extreme peril as I struggled through another 50 fly.

Jeff came up with ingenious idea (for the first time in his life...) to have each swimmer write something positive about another swimmer on the blog. While three people have already written their paragraphs (posted below), the rest of us are taking some more time to think about what we truly have to say about these people (or, in some cases, matching a name on a slip of paper to a face...).

Finally, while I have looked these over for anything glaringly inappropriate or mean, I take no responsibility for any viewpoints expressed or glaring errors in punctuation made (*cough cough* Greeno...)

Chris on Victor:

Today at 630 AM when I took a look at Victor Liot I said to myself, "I wish I was that sexy." As sweat dripped down his chisled abs I realized that Victor is truly the essence of man. His locks of brown curly hair could be straight from a Polo catalog and his accent is as attractive as fragrant azalea to a hummingbird. Furthermore, his epic feats in practice, including held 2:46 200 breasts and a throrough crushing of coach Jeff make my eyes water with desire and heart pound with man-love. Victor, you are truly amazing.

<3 Chris

p.s. Congratulations on your first two burritos. They are truly the most American food that isn't actually American. I promise that Erik will take you to Chipotle when we get back and he'll bring me too (and of course buy).

Elise on Kathryn:

Besides how great it is to mooch off of your food, there's actually a lot of stuff about you that I've come to appreciate in these last tiring, humid, S.O.U.T.H.-filled days. I love your great sense of humor (especially when we're trying to get to sleep and just CAN'T), and your attitude at practice is really helpful (like when we're doing a set of 800s... pain... ful...). It's also a plus that you don't toss, turn, or snore in your sleep. Finally, you're a swimmer with both a lot of talent and potential, and I love being at practice with you! See you when we get back! (We're gonna be sooooooo fast! Well, you are, at least...)

~ELISE :) ~

Victor on Maddie:

Maddie is one of the hardest workes on the team. She is train very hard in every practice. She is very fun, she always laugh. I will remember her when i will be back in France. It was very fun to take photo with you.

Run, Eat, Swim, Eat, Swim, Eat, Sleep

Swimmers started with 4.5 mile run today again and finished quicker than yesterday. WOw! I was shocked. I am creating good distance runners. Ha,ha.
E.R. finished the run in first place followed by Greeno,Adam and Matt. Everyone else was pretty steady and ran fast. Will and I are awesome running buddies, we have been keeping each other going on the morning runs (the pace is perfect). Kathyrn and Peyttes girls were on fire finishing close behind the guys.
For the am practice, We had a distance set today that included 6 x800's free with 12 x 100's free intersected (on descending intervals). Kim and I were so amazed at how well everyone stepped up and made the intervals plus gave us more effort overall, It was exciting. Kim and I both counted up the yardage and came to the same count of 9,000 meters. E.R must not have done the whole workout to come up with 8,600.
Adam, Victor, Maddie, Heather, and Kathyrn had an amazing distant set.

Our second practice of the day was Goal 50's sprints. Swimmers were making the goals and swimming fast. We had to stop the set because the lifegaurds prematurely blew the bullhorns for thunder. I wasn't happy! We still finished a two hour workout but just wanted to finish those last 7 x 50's. Brian was the only one that made all goal 50's on his given goal time. Great job B.C.! Other noted sprints were Jack, Erin, Elise, Heather, and Zach.

We ate at Moe's (mexican resturant) and wen't to the outlet mall for team activity.

Go Gators!

I'm not dead (yet)

Contrary to what my mom seemed to think in the voicemail she left me during practice, I am in fact still alive, as is everyon else here.

Today's practice was pretty hard; a major contrast with yesturday's recovery set. We did somewhere between 8400-8600 metres accodring to Kim, though Jeff figures we did around 9km. However, since we all know how good Jeff is at math, I'm more inclined to believe Kim the math teacher over him. That's awkward. The main set involved 6x800 free mixed with some quick 1s free.

Alright, I'm off to go ice my shoulder's, then go swim again in ~1.5 hours. That's awkward.

More sunscreen and aloe (finally)

On the way back from dinner today, we stopped at what Hobe calls "the Gheto Publix," though I personally didn't see anything wrong with the sunscreen section.

Evening practice was pretty fun for group 1, as Jeff is now calling it. We did some killer core work with Hobe before we got in the water. I'm pretty sure I lost a good three pounds of pure water weight during the 45 minute workout. The practice itself, however, wasn't too difficult. Mostly backstroke drill, with a brief overview of "The 5 Fundamentals of Breastroke" with Neil.

The weather continues to be hot and humid, with lots of sun, but it doesn't really seem like anyone was burned too badly today.

I would talk about the music we've been listening to, but I have to run to (another) mandatory team meeting. I promise to get it up tomorrow.

Live long and prosper.

Great 3 HOUR practice

Sunday am was the day that God helped everyone get through the 3 hour practice of 8,300 meters and the 4 mile run for the first half of the day. I applaud Group 1 for staying positive and supporting one another through the sets. As hard as it was everyone to wrap their minds around what they were going to be faced with, they stayed true to finishing the workout with no excuses and completed it with as much spirit and speed as they had left. Maddie, Erik and Matt did 12 x200 fly in groups of 3. They did great but Maddie crushed the boys on the set. Nice work Holker.

Breaststrokers held there own with the same set and getting much stronger through out the set. Victor , Zach, Adam, Mama, and Heather keep each other company . All where averaging about 3:15 but fast times were all around 3:06, Victor went crazy and popped off a 2:48 on number 12.

Backstrokers were Brian and Will. Reall nice solid backstrokes today with a steady decrease in times throughout as well. Brian held 2:46 average to descend to 2:36. That was good. Will held 3:08 to come down to 2:56. Best I have seen Will Erickson train EVER!

Everyone did a wonderful job on finishing the mainset of specialty strokes/ freestyle set. I definately was even more impressed with the sprint 6 x100's free after the set. People to mention that did them on the given interval and made all of them out of the group was; Maddie and Heather on 1:25, Adam on 1:20 and Victor on 1:15.

We have group 2 doing the set this afternoon and I look forward to equal or greater results again. Everyone is down for the count (getting a nap) for a couple of hours. We are loading up the van once again at 3pm to swim.

The trip has been excellent thus far!

3 hours of... you know

As you may have guessed from the title, morning practice was almost a full three hours. We did specialty 200s, with a little bit of free mixed in. Practice ended with more sprint free, which is no longer really any sort of surprise.

Apparently we're also running bleachers tonight, so I'm off to take a nap so that I won't die. I might anyways, though.

Jeff says he'll post at some point today on his account, which means that we very well may get snowed in at some point (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, see this post from yesturday).

Red Lobster

Everyone got burned today.

ER out

Ok, now here's the real post:
Although everyone did use sunscreen, everyone managed to get burned in some way, shape, or form:
Kathryn-Face burn, major goggle marks
Kate-Burned on her right side
Erin-Burned on her left side
Adam-Burned during the ACT (don't ask)
Elise-Minor back burn
Heather-Cap burn, back splotches
Maddy-Left side of neck and upper shoulder is burned (Jeff is pretty sure that someone (Heather) didn't rub the sunscreen in).
Zach-Minor neck burn, doesn't hurt... "yet"
Emma-White forehead, red face.
Will-Goggle tan, face burn, back splotches
Jack-Back burned
E. Flack-Mid back
Greeno-Back, lower back/butt tan
Victor-A spot in the middle of his back (it oddly resembles the shape of France...)
Erik-Back, neck, some shoulders, some cap tan
Matt-Added freckles, back burn, beet red face
Brian-Incredibly tan, avoided sunburn without the use of sunscreen... Except on the bottoms of his feet (we're not quite sure how that happend...)
Jeff-Second degree burns on his arms from trying to show off his guns.
Kim-Just burned in general

Other than that, we had a great day. Dinner was at some Famous Dave's type place, which I'm told is called Shane's Rib Shack or something. Some of us hung out at the mall, though some of us went to see movies.

Everyone completed the IM set (not quite with flying colors, but withing Jeff's standards). Neil's practice was not that bad, and we got to hit the d-boards at the end.

Jeff's turn (be very, very afraid):

Morning run went well because everyone made it on time! No one has over slept as of yet....hmmm??? who will be the first room to "not wake up?"

Humidity was awesome; I think we all lost 5 lbs in the first run... lots of water around here.

Everyone kicked butt on the IM (12 x 200's descending set) followed by the 8 x 50's sprint set off the blocks at the end of practice. Victor and Zach had the fastest reported times in the set and everyone else did their goal times.... I was very happy!

We had two visitors today that most of the boys liked a lot! Two blonde European girls that swam with us and were very nice.

I look forward to the upcoming days!! So far so good and we are having fun. Wish the rest of the senior group could be here as well. You are all missed!

It's me again!

Ok, tomorrow, I'll probably be talking about all the music we've been listening to, as well as attempting to get some pictures of us up. I'll also continue covering the training and food. Finally, tomorrow I'll be getting a few more people (namely Jeff and Kim) set up as admins on the blog, so that they will be able to post as well. I'll be sure to update periodically throughout the day.

Oh, Jack and Will have promised me posts over the next few days, but don't count on anything being produced.

Running at Sunrise

Now that we're about halfway through our first full day of camp, I think we all have a little better idea of what this week will actually be like.

We went on a 2 mile run this morning, which wasn't all that difficult, although it was really hot. After the run, we did some abs, then went inside to have breakfast at the all-you-can-eat buffet. Needless to say, unlimited, free (from our point of view, at least) food is never a bad thing, especially when it tastes good.

Morning practice was fairly difficult; definitley worse than yesturday's, at least for the group I was in. We did a 1.5 hour IM set with surprise sprint free at the end, but I heard that the technique practice wasn't that bad, so I'm looking foreward to tonight.

After practice, Neil took us to Chick-fil-A, one of the best fast food chains in existance.

Now on to some notes about this blog. Jeff suggested that everyone on the team try to contribute at least one post at some point during the week, but that's about as likely as us having to miss a practice due to a blizzard. I'm pretty sure that Jeff will post at least a few times, if he ever gets around to making an account, that is. If not, then I guess the three people actually reading this blod will get to listen to me for the whole week.

Finally, I apologize in advance if the quality of the posts keeps declining due to exhaustion, soreness, or simply laziness on my part.

Day 1

Today was the first day of the camp. We flew in, then pretty much dropped our stuff at the hotel and went to the pool (after waiting for certain people, of course).
Practice was allegedly "easy," according to El Jefe, so I'm scared for the rest of the camp. Mostly freestyle on fairly easy intervals, but there was also some sprint free that was a bit challenging. The pool was really nice and incredibly clear, but the locker rooms were a bit sketchy.
We had dinner at a Mexican place which was "better than Chipotle, in my opinion," according to Zach Litwin, who went on to say "That place was really good."
Now I'm off to a (mandatory) team meeting, then we'll probably hit up Dunkin' Doughnuts and the gas station.
I thought I heard something about having to run at 6:30 tomorrow. That will be... interesting.
Finally, Neil would like me to give a positive shout out to himself and FGCU. He's great, seeing as he bought us dinner (I think it's part of the camp, but he did anyway). Also, FGCU has a great campus and a really nice pool.
